Commercial Court

The Commercial Court at the Higher Regional Court of Frankfurt am Main consists of two senates and a dedicated team of mediator judges (Güterichter).

The 1st Senate, chaired by Presiding Judge at the Higher Regional Court Willoughby, handles general commercial disputes.

The 2nd Senate, chaired by Presiding Judge at the Higher Regional Court Braun, focuses on disputes in banking and finance law as well as transport law.

Mediator judges at the Commercial Court

The parties may also make use of settlement proceedings before a mediator judge (Güterichter). In this framework, all methods of dispute resolution, including mediation, are available to facilitate a tailor-made settlement.

Commercial Chambers

At the Regional Court of Frankfurt am Main, three chambers for commercial matters and three civil chambers have been established as Commercial Chambers. The same presiding judges chair both the civil chambers and the chambers for commercial matters, ensuring consistency of expertise and practice.

Judges

Judges at the Commercial Court and at the Commercial Chambers have several years of experience in the areas of law assigned to the panels and/or comparable qualifications from legal or other professional activities.

The mediator judges (Güterichter) in Frankfurt likewise draw on extensive experience. For many years, they have successfully conducted mediations in complex corporate disputes, demonstrating both expertise and commitment to alternative dispute resolution.

Judicial Expertise at the Commercial Court Frankfurt

The Commercial Court Frankfurt brings together a highly experienced and internationally oriented judiciary specialised in complex commercial disputes.

  • Over 300 years of combined judicial experience, including 213 years at the Higher Regional Court (Oberlandesgericht) Frankfurt
  • All judges have extensive experience in complex commercial litigation, particularly in corporate law, M&A disputes and international business matters
  • 9 out of 11 judges at the Commercial Court, as well as all judges of the Commercial Chambers, previously worked in leading commercial law firms (approx. 90%)
  • Around 80% of the judges have lived or worked abroad for extended periods
  • Strong international academic and professional background, including:
    • at least four LL.M. degrees
    • two Maître en Droit degrees
    • admission to the New York Bar

This combination of judicial expertise, commercial practice experience and international exposure ensures a deep understanding of complex cross-border disputes and international business transactions.
